Na de zomervakantie van 1981 begonnen twee Engelsen met het uitgeven van - door hun zelf geschreven- reisgidsen. In 1982 kwam de eerste Rough Guide to Greece op de markt. Sindsdien beschrijven de reisgidsen van Rough Guides meer dan 200 bestemmingen over de hele wereld.
